Abstract: Objectives: (1) validate rats as a model for binaural hearing in cochlear implant (CI) patients; (2) use behavioural experiments on normally hearing and binaural CI animals to determine temporal weighting functions (TWFs) for ITD; (3) clarify the physiology of TWFs through electrophysiological recordings in auditory cortex (AC) and inferior colliculus (IC). We hypothesise that ITD onset-dominance is similar in rats and humans, and in normal and neuroprosthetic hearing. The extent to which lack of hearing experience in early life changes TWFs needs to be established.
